Top Supplement Recommendations for Thyroid

Thyroid disease is widespread, with an estimated 20 million people in the United States having some form of thyroid disorder.

As a thyroid dysfunction specialist, I've met with thousands of individuals suffering from thyroid-related symptoms. During my time with these patients, I'm asked a common question.

Here's the question I'm asked regularly by my thyroid patients:

What supplements, vitamins, and minerals can I take to help my thyroid dysfunction?

While there are many different ways you can support your body and its healing, such as making dietary and lifestyle changes, there's also been a lot of research on supplements that help with thyroid dysfunction.

The thyroid requires many minerals and vitamins to support the production of thyroid hormones, which are essential to every cell and tissue, and organ inside your body.

Thankfully there are quite a few vitamins, minerals, and supplements that can help with thyroid dysfunction and related symptoms.

Remember - if you're taking or contemplating taking a supplement, make sure to update your health practitioner because some supplements can interfere with thyroid medications, other drugs, and pharmaceuticals.

Get to know my top supplement recommendations for the thyroid by reading below:

Selenium

Selenium is an antioxidant and can help remove free radicals in the thyroid gland. This is a crucial function in preventing thyroid gland damage and premature aging.

Selenium is also necessary for converting T4 into T3 and can reduce thyroid antibody levels.

Zinc

Zinc is a versatile nutrient regarding thyroid function and can help synthesize thyroid hormones. By stimulating the hypothalamus, zinc helps to form thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which aids in the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Zinc is also responsible for maintaining proper serum levels of T3, T4, and TSH4.

Manganese

Low manganese will result in poor thyroid gland function and is involved in the formation of thyroxine11. In addition, manganese is part of the intracellular antioxidant enzyme, Manganese Superoxide Dismutase, an essential protector of the thyroid gland.

Hypothyroidism also leads to poor absorption of manganese.

B12

Nearly half of patients with thyroid dysfunction have a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Vitamin B12 is necessary for proper red blood cell formation, cognitive function, and DNA synthesis. Supplementing with B12 can help lessen your symptoms.

Copper

A copper deficiency causes the hypothalamus to be incapable of regulating thyroid gland activity.

Copper also plays a vital role in thyroid metabolism, especially in hormone production and absorption. Copper also stimulates the production of the thyroxine hormone T4 and prevents the over absorption of T4 in the blood cells by regulating the body's calcium levels.

This is just a short list of some vitamins, minerals, and supplements you can take to help your thyroid.

In addition, it's pretty common to find a thyroid support supplement that includes many of the vitamins/supplements I mentioned above.

Remember to always consult with your health practitioner to ensure what you're taking is safe for you and your health situation.

The Importance of Thyroid Evaluation

It's essential to have your thyroid evaluated before taking supplements, minerals, and vitamins. If you haven't had a complete evaluation, feel free to reach out to me - I can help you determine WHY your thyroid is in dysfunction and what exact nutrients you're lacking.

Some of my patients have come to me with stories of traditional medicine not working... and to me, it's easy to understand their failings.

Part of the problem with traditional medicine health practitioners is that they suggest that you need a specific supplement, such as iodine. However, without evaluating your thyroid first, it's impossible to know if iodine is something you're lacking nutritionally.

As a health practitioner specializing in thyroid function, I have a proven track record of evaluating thyroid dysfunction and creating customized treatment plans for my patients.

I seek to understand what's causing your condition - not just put a bandaid fix on your condition.

Reversing your thyroid issues won't be easy, but I can assure you that I use proven methods with my patients to pinpoint their cause of thyroid dysfunction.

I work with thyroid patients every day using the functional medicine model. As a result, I can share real-life success stories with you, proving that this model works. If you're interested in reading or watching some of my patients' testimonials, please reach out to me.
