How Genetics Play a Role In Your Diabetes

The number of Americans with diabetes is rapidly growing with the latest numbers showing roughly 10% of Americans have diabetes and 20% of those people don’t even know it. With so many people diagnosed and the numbers still growing, it can feel like getting diabetes is inevitable. This is especially true if you have a family history of diabetes.

There is a common misconception that diabetes is a genetic condition but this is NOT true.

Let’s talk about why.

There is NO SUCH THING as a diabetes gene.

There are some genetic factors that can contribute to being pre-diabetic, but these are not determinative and they certainly do not mean that you will get diabetes. Just because your mom, dad, siblings, or other family members are diabetic does not mean you have to be.

Now, if this is true, why do we see so many people develop diabetes?

1. Family Lifestyles

While your genetics may not predetermine your risk level for diabetes, the choices you make certainly do. Often families lead similar lifestyles and those lifestyle factors have a huge impact on a person’s overall health. If you come from a family that makes poor diet choices and rarely exercises and you follow down that path, your likelihood of diabetes goes up. Was it inevitable? NO! It’s all about the decisions you make and the agency you take over your own life.

2. Lack of Knowledge

On the same note, if you don’t take action to prevent health conditions like diabetes, your risk factor greatly raises. Are you aware of the main risk factors for diabetes? Your weight, blood pressure, activity level, age, and cholesterol levels are just some of the indicators that you’re pre-diabetic or at a higher risk factor for diabetes. The more you know, the more you can take deliberate action to fight back

3. Mindset

The biggest ramification of this myth of a diabetes gene is the mindset it puts people in. If you feel you’re somehow “doomed to diabetes”, you won’t take the action you can to optimize your health. Instead, you’ll simply resign yourself to poor health and as the mind goes, the body surely follows. This is perhaps one of the biggest health hurdles people need to overcome on their journey to wellness. The first step is believing you can be healthy and then taking the action to make that health come to fruition.

Even if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you can not only restore your health, but REVERSE your diabetes naturally, without painful surgeries or mountains of prescription drugs.
