Top Supplement Recommendations for Diabetes
The most common form of diabetes, Type 2, means that your body doesn’t utilize insulin correctly. While some can manage their blood sugar levels with proper nutrition and physical activity, some may need more support than others.
One of the most common questions I receive from my patients is what supplements can help with diabetes.
Thankfully there are quite a few supplements, herbs, and even kitchen spices to support your Type 2 diabetes and blood sugar.
Remember - if you’re taking or contemplating taking a supplement, make sure to update your health practitioner because some supplements can interfere with diabetes, other drugs, and pharmaceuticals.
My first recommendation comes right from your kitchen cabinet. This tasty spice is commonly used in various dishes - and I recommend adding a dash to help reduce your blood sugars.
Cinnamon
Known for its warm flavor and popular to add to baked goods and curries, this common kitchen spice has many health benefits - including lowering your blood sugars.
Cinnamon helps manage the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream and imitates the blood sugar hormone, insulin.
So, the next time you’re baking, be sure to add an extra dash.
Next, I’m going to share some natural supplements you can buy online, at a local health food store, or from your health practitioner.
Berberine
Berberine is one of the most common supplements used by diabetes patients. Used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, it works in the body in numerous ways and can transform or modify the body’s cells.
Berberine can have positive effects on blood sugar, triglycerides, and insulin.
Make sure to consult with your health practitioner to ensure this is a good option for you.
Gymnema
An herb used in Ayurvedic medicine, Gymnema is known for its ability to help with balancing blood sugar levels.
This herb has been shown to prevent the absorption of extra glucose in the small intestine, aiding in balancing the quantity of glucose in your bloodstream.
Gymnema can also prevent diabetic difficulties in the long term, and may be effective due to its ability to increase insulin secretion.
Chromium
Chromium is an essential mineral for human nutrition and aids in the normal function of insulin - one critical hormone for the regular regulation of blood sugar.
Chromium supplements can significantly reduce blood sugar and triglyceride levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
This is just a short list of some herbs, spices, and supplements you can take to lower blood sugars naturally.
However, it’s important to note that supplements such as those I listed will never reverse your diabetes on their own.
